Moderator’s welcome introduction to all delegates and speakers

Paul Godfrey talks about the impact that architecture has had on the development of human society, and how the latest trends in lifestyle preferences are driving a new generation of architects and localised design values. We simply don’t know what the future of architecture is

The discussion revolves around identifying what the future will actually look like. Is it even possible to define what urban landscapes will be like in 10 or 20 years’ time, given that completely new factors such as autonomous vehicles, universal drone delivery and flying personal transport are all now imminent?

Why the Future City is a gym

Contrary to much of the dialogue around the growth of mega cities and ‘giga-projects’, the reality is that while looking at the future of our urban lifestyles, it’s important not to forget the importance of human centric and wellness-focused urban design. The new-style cities of the future will involve a series of clusters, where all needs – from work to leisure to wellness – can be satisfactorily met. In this sense, the city can be seen as a ‘gym’, contributing to health and vitality, and a place where our needs for lifestyle nourishment can be uppermost.

This presentation reviews the trends in public sector briefs and shows client briefings and remits are responding to changing idea of space, privacy and integration in the post-pandemic GCC.

    The power of re-purposing

Vast tracts of cities across the world are no longer fit for purpose, their structures worn down and overpopulated. But instead of costly demolition and massive re-building enterprises, it makes strong economic and social sense to re-purpose buildings – creating fresh and vibrant communities around local architectural and community hubs, while maintaining everything that was best about the existing structures and their amenities.

The design technologies driving the urban landscape of the future

Design and the technology driving design are critical factors often overlooked when talking generally about how a future city will interact and the infrastructure that will service its multi-million populations. Yet in reality, it is the breakthroughs in design – and the use of advanced BIM, generative modelling and LiDAR mapping – that are dramatically re-shaping the boundaries of what we see as feasible design styles, and enabling the organic growth that we can now see in in keynote projects such as the Museum of the Future.
